random picture of the day
huge accident on mission today... the picture doesn't show it but the Audi's front windshield (on the driver's side) was all smashed out. The traffic was lousy for many commuters but I doubt any of them had their day ruined like the driver of the TT.
UPDATE:
After driving past the accident scene - this time going southbound instead of northbound as I was originally - I saw that police had placed at least 20 little teepee tags all over the ground in front of the Audi. You know those tags the police on TV and in movies always use to pinpoint and count shell casings fired from a perp's automatic weapons? It was like that. Additionally, the front end of the Audi wasn't severely damaged like I would assume a car would be if the driver was thrown through the windshield in a sudden stop.
Maybe something more sinister than a mere car accident happened here today. I'll report more later.

Jaywalking Pedestrian Was Drunk, On Cellphone, When Fatally Struck

UPDATED: 4:22 pm PDT June 8, 2007
FREMONT -- Authorities say that a 32-year-old man apparently was drunk, talking on his cell phone and jaywalking when a car struck and killed him on Mission Boulevard near Mayhews Road at 8:03 a.m. Thursday.
Police say that witnesses told them that David DeJesus of Fremont had been celebrating his birthday the previous night and had been drinking heavily.
A preliminary police investigation indicates that DeJesus was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of Mission Blvd in a mid-block crossing during heavy morning commute traffic.
According to police, DeJesus is believed to have been talking on his cell phone when he suddenly crossed in front of a northbound 2001 Audi Coupe which was driven by a 48-year-old Walnut Creek man.
Police say DeJesus sustained major injuries to his lower extremities and fatal injuries to his head.
Police say that although the case is still under investigation, there appears to have been nothing that the driver could have done to avoid the collision.
Anyone who has information about the accident is asked to call the Fremont police traffic services unit at (510) 790-6760.
In a separate incident, 45-year-old Wayne Gonzales of Newark was killed after he was run over by a big-rig after sleeping under the truck's rear tires on the loading ramp of Michael's Arts and Crafts at 39170 Argonaut Way in Fremont about 5:45 a.m. Thursday.
